With all this talk about regulating pornography on the web I had time to think about who can fix it and how it can be fixed. We learned in lecture that the problem with creating an .xxx domain is the global factors of websites. Now right away I become confused; not because I don’t understand the global situation, but a lack of understanding why that would even matter.

The United States probably has the majority of adult websites I’m assuming. Based on that assumption I wonder why it wouldn’t be worth it to regulate such a huge part of the market. Sure we won’t get it all, but it would be a start. Not only that, but maybe other countries would follow in our footsteps. Not to mention you can then go as far as to creating domains for each country or something along those lines. Maybe it’s all too difficult, but I say it should be tried atleast. I’m sure a lot of people affected may move to other countries to do business, but it wouldn’t be all of them. I guess I just think protecting our children a little bit more is far better than not at all.

Someone Who Knows What They Want

Well I just read a post on a blog by Kate at Myspace.com. Now it wasn’t the most amazing blog, but I was amazed to see someone simply say what they are. She goes as far as to call herself a slut. Usually people beat around the bush and don’t say what they want, but she did not beat around anything. I guess some people would think of someone as disturbed or messed up if they thought in such a way, but I have to say I sort of respect it. Maybe it’s just the man in me liking the fact that women can admit how bad they want sex. Either way, I guess you can say it’s definately something you don’t see that often.

A Political Question For Mr.Lucas

I read Mr.Lucas’s stance on Hilary Clinton and have only this one question: Do you think any other politicians are any better in their homosexual support? I’m not saying that it isn’t wrong for her to be only partially accepting, but I think there are more issues to observe. What if she was running for President and the only other candidate supported homosexuals, but wanted to completely cut health care? I sure think a stance on health care is more important because of the effects. What if she would end the useless war in Iraq, would it not be worth it? No offense to any homosexuals, but can Hilary Clinton do much to affect your lives as homosexuals? She would be running the country as a whole, not individual people. I see where you’re coming from, but I guess I would just like to know why her stance is so crucial?

The Senator and the Pornographer

Why did we have to watch that silly Congressional hearing? I undertstand its importance, but I feel like some of these senators are idiots. Senator Lincoln stated that the parents can’t do it alone. Senator Lautenburg talked about the alarming numbers and how they need to be stopped. Senator Nelson then went on to talk about evil and how filtering needed to be improved. Let me put it into perspective like a mentioned in one of my other posts. Where are these parents? If every parent made it so that their children had no access to porn, cahtrooms, and webcams, there wouldn’t be a problem. Frankly the children shouldn’t be accessing the internet without their parents around. I grew up without the internet and I survived.

Why does Congress talk about the attack on pornography instead of the internet as a whole. They’re not going to get any help from the porn industry themselves and doing so would be a form of censorship anyway, so why can’t they try to eduacte parents more. Put heavier penalties on the parents of kids that get in trouble on the internet. Parents simply don’t want to tell their kids no and it’s biting them in the ass big time. Take the computer to a different room, check with parents of their peers to see where there computer is, and take some action to help your own children. I guess you can say that I’m sick of parents blaming everyone but themselves. It’s not Marilyn Manson causing kids to kill, it’s not The Basketball Diaries that causes kids to shoot up their school, it’s the lack of guidance and the lack of parents taking responsibility.

Porn Triumphs!

Recently I read a post by Cyberchelle and realized something about porn. Pornography will never go away and it’s better to accept it, then constantly try to fight it. Cyberchelle talks about how far adult films have come along over the years. People will always want to see porn and why not give them something new to watch? Pornography has power and it’s far too large of an industry to fight. I personally haven’t gone out to buy a video in a very long time, but I’ve certainly looked at some point on the internet. People want to watch, to fantasize, and as long as it’s legal why stop them? People have the right to do these things and it’s only just that porn makes it better each year. Sure there are those out there that think of it as disgusting and wish for it to be banished forever, but I say if you don’t like it you don’t have to look.

Double-edged Sword

Every day children are exposed to porn on the internet and parents everywhere want to find ways of stopping it. Listening to the On Point radio show I realized that the parents asking how to stop it may be the problem. On one hand the parents don’t want to talk to their kids about sex, thinking that it’ll give them ideas, and on the other side we see the lack of knowledge setting these kids to discovery what they don’t know.

Educating kids is the most important thing. If you tell your children about sex and the negativity of porn, then they will be less likely to seek out these things. Don’t just complain and grumble about how it needs to go away, but instead take time to make them not want to look at pornography. I’m sure it’s easier said then done, but where are these parents when their child is using their webcam to show themselves? Are they really that blind to what goes on in their kids lives? I just can’t fathom how a child could do this in their own home. Here’s some ideas I have on how to help these parents. First don’t give them a webcam or keep the computer in a room where parents can see what they’re looking at. Second, do what was talked about in the radio show and get a clean ISP that will filter out the bad websites ahead of time. Third, talk to your kids early in life about sex and what it should be about. Parents may want their children to have freedom, but let’s stop allowing them to do whatever they want, because what they want may end up being bad.

Joe Francis Gone Wild

I find it interesting that a man like Joe Francis (the creator of Girls Gone Wild) can get away with manipulating women the way he does. Most of these women are not of a culpable mental state and may not even be aware of what they’re doing. If he were to have sex with any of them, he would easily be setting himself up for a rape conviction. The point being that it’s immoral and it seems justified that he incur the problems he later did.

Joe Francis was forced at gunpoint to pose in embarassing ways and then blackmailed by Darnell Riley; Riley was blackmailing Paris Hilton as well. You can read about this story and agree or disagree that he got what he deserved. I feel that he deserved more than that, but I guess justice can only go so far. Maybe someday he can look back and realize what a morally corrupt person he has been and redeem himself somehow.

We Can All Be Corrupted

I was just thinking about Lecture 26 and how it was mentioned that certain people can be corrupted, but others can’t. Where this may be true, I don’t understand how certain people can be excused from doing evil deeds, because they’re too young or they are victims of less fortune. I guess my point is that they write so much of the law in stone, that other things are avoided. Just because kids under 18 are considered minors, they certainly have the knowledge these days to do the same evil that adults do.

Recently in one of my classes the professor asked several questions that pretty much concluded the fact that teenagers are having sex. Now I know from my own experience that I knew what I was doing when I was 15. That’s not to say that all minors know more than they should, but I just believe it shouldn’t be as cut and dry as it is. If a minor is exposed to things by their parents and therefore corrupted by them, what would stop that child from having a sexual relationship prior to age 18. Not to mention the fact that there are some 16 and 17 year olds getting into bars these days. I went to bars when I was 17, so I’m sure there’s others out there. So who is responsible when that girl does something with an older guy. Is it the bar’s fault? How about the parents? We all know that the older man would be the one to blame and someday I just wish I could see everyone look into these situations further. I guess I’ve just heard enough horror stories to make me believe change is neeeded. We need to protect our children be let’s not resort to scapegoating.

100% Rape Rate

I’m so glad we have blogs like PourNoCoffee because the post Kudos to Morgan really made me want to say my true feelings about the Morgan article. I agree that rape is a evil thing, but I found it so difficult to write in favor of an article that seems to believe that almost all women have been raped at some point. Of course with the exception of women not yet having sex. It’s not that I belive it’s ok for husbands to pressure their wives into having sex or for boyfriends to make their girlfriends feel guilty for not wanting to, but I definately think it’s not even in the same ballpark as rape. There’s not many wives that need years of therapy after having sex with their husband just to shut him up. Would Tori Amos make good music if her boyfriend simply guilted her into having sex? I think rape is a very horrible thing, but it is what it is. In fact all those experts say that rape isn’t even about sex, it’s about control. That leads me to say that this article was completely wrong, because porn is definately about sex. Try to connect them all you want, but I will never really agree. I just had to pretend to for one post.

Holy Porn Wars!

I find it intersting that in the same country where we need to stop saying the pledge of allegiance so we don’t offend people that religion could have an impact on our rules of living. The abortion debate is clearly about religious beliefs and the same can be said for pornography. Religion teaches morals and that leads to legal decisions. Actually it’s not really religions anymore. The correct thing to say would be that churches and religious groups dictate the law.

I know hearing it sounds a tad bit far fetched, but until we realize what is happening in this country, it’s going to get worse. Anyone who is strongly religious and reading this will most likely disagree and think I’m an idiot. Well churches teach us morals and morals are what decides laws, so you figure it out. My problem is that churches shouldn’t be deciding what is moral or immoral, it should be individuals. People think you have to learn somewhere, but I always thought that was what the family was for. I’m not saying that people shouldn’t go to church or to pray to God, but I think it should stop it at worship in the church. Don’t bring your church to the rest of the world, because the rest of trhe world may not want you. Let the people of the world and the families decide what’s right and wrong, not the church.
